Best ever GCSE results for College

Smith’s Wood Sports College has received its best ever set of GCSE results with 98% of students receiving 5 A* to C grades, an increase which bucks the national trend.

50% of students received A* to C grades including English and Maths, a figure up 8% on last year’s set of results.

83% of students received higher grades in English, whilst 51% of received higher grades in Maths and 64% receiving double higher grades in Science.

As a result of these record breaking figures, the college has reached – and exceeded – the Government’s ACEM benchmark, a tremendous achievement  for the college for whom in 2008, just 13% of pupils achieved five A* to C grades including English and Maths.

Smith’s Wood Sports College Raises Over £2000 for Cancer Research

Students, parents and staff of Smith’s Wood Sports College ran the Cancer Research ‘Race for Life’ in memory of staff members who have been lost to the illness, raising more than £2000 for the charity.

The race, which took place on Friday 13th July saw the College close early so that all students, parents and staff can take part in the race. There was fundraising throughout the afternoon including cake sales, a craft stall and a raffle.

The College race was in memory of three staff members who lost their lives because of cancer.

Sports Day Cancelled

Smith’s Wood Sports College has made the decision to cancel Sports Day which was to be held at the Alexander Stadium on Friday in Birmingham.

This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but the safety of our pupils is of parramount importance to us. We are currently looking at the College calendar to see if we can accommodate a Sports Day on College site during the last two weeks of this academic year.

Therefore, Friday will be a normal day at College and students should attend, as always, in full college uniform.

‘We Can Work It Out’ – New Head Girl Vows to Make a Difference

Paige Smith, Head Girl

Paige Smith, Head Girl

Year 10 student Paige Smith has recently been named as the New Head Girl for 2012 / 2013. I meet her during an Art lesson when she is engrossed in painting a portrait.

I am struck when speaking with Paige by her natural confidence and obvious delight in her new appointment. Paige is an avid Beatles fan and speaks enthusiastically of her ‘Beatle-versary’ – the time she first really listened to the band in December 2010. Paige says the group reminds her of her Granddad who lives in Scotland with other members of her family and describes them as ‘truly beautiful’.

Paige lives at home with her Mum and Dad and two brothers, 8-week old Jac and 6 year-oldHarrison. In her spare time, Paige enjoys reading, watching television and drawing.
