Starter of the day:

Both KS3 and KS4 pupils at Smith’s Wood Sports College have three hours of mathematics every week. In Year 7, sets are of mixed ability. Sets are streamed in year 9, as this is when the preparation for GCSE study begins. A mathematics challenge club is run to stretch the most able pupils, and they are encouraged to solve more unusual problems that they may not get to see in the classroom. For those who attend this club, there is an opportunity to take part in the UKMT Team Mathematics Challenge. We also have a support programme in place, called “Power of 2”, which aims to give extra help in the form of one-on-one sessions during mathematics lessons each week.

Teaching is usually divided into four areas: number, algebra, shape and space and data handling. Pupils will not only learn to master these topics individually, but also to appreciate the links between them. Last year, 90% of our pupils achieved at least a level 5 at the end of Key Stage 3.

At GCSE, we have the option for pupils to study for the Foundation Tier exam or the Higher Tier exam using the OCR B Specification. Last year, 52% of pupils achieved a Grade C or higher in their GCSE exam.

We have an enthusiastic group of students studying mathematics at A Level standard in Years 12 and 13. Pupils sit the Edexcel qualification, and get a chance to study the four core modules, as well as two from mechanics, statistics or decision. We also have a group of KS5 students who are either retaking their GCSE to try and achieve a higher grade or are completing a Level 2 Functional Mathematics qualification.
